In 2011 the Mater Private Hospital we will be celebrating 25 years since first opening our doors to patients in 1986.
Testament to the dedication of staff, in 2010 we celebrated over 200 staff members who had service of 15 years or more.

- 1778 Birth of Catherine McAuley, founder of the sisters of Mercy
- 1827 Following the passing of her adoptive parents die, Catherine McAuley became heavily involved in caring for the less fortunate members of society
- 1851 Lands purchase where the MMUH now stands
- 1881 Mater Private Nursing Home Opens
- 1986 Mater Private Hospital Opens
Today the Mater Private Hospital has facilities in Dublin and Limerick, as well as a unique partnership with MMUH offering the only public hospital based PET/CT scanner in Ireland.
Mater Private Hospital Eccles Street
In Dublin the Eccles Street facility consists of +180 inpatient beds, +20 day therapy beds, 10 day oncology couches, 7 theatres and a 9 bed Intensive Care Unit
Highlights and New Services in the recent past include:
- First hospital in Ireland to carry out Deep Brain Stimulation
- Aortic Valve Replacement
- Introduction of Paediatric services
- Launch of the Retinal Eye Centre – Rapid Access Retinal Services with particular focus on detection and management of Age Related Maculation Degeneration and Diabetic Retinopathy
- Introduction of a 2nd Linear Accelerator in the Mid-Western Radiation Oncology Centre, offering improved access and greater treatment options such as IMRT and IGRT to patients in the region.
- Rapid Access Colposcopy Clinic
- Introduction of Robotic Assisted Surgery
The Mid-Western Radiation Oncology Centre
Opened in October 2005, the Mid-Western Radiation Oncology Centre is operated by the Mater Private Hospital. The Mid-Western Radiation Oncology Centre is located in the Cancer Centre on the grounds of the Mid-Western Regional Hospital, Limerick. The centre works as part of the wider cancer services team and treats both public and private patients. Treatment is planned and delivered using modern linear accelerator, CT simulator and treatment planning software.
The on-site multi-disciplinary team consists of a Consultant Radiation Oncologist, Radiation Oncology Registrar, Radiation Therapists, Physicists, Nursing Staff and Dietician.
The Mater PET/CT Centre
The Mater PET/CT Centre is a unique public and a private partnership between the Mater Misericordiae University Hospital and the Mater Private Hospital, offering the only public hospital based PET/CT scanner in Ireland. The Mater PET/CT Centre is located in the Mater Misercordiae University Hospital on Eccles St.
